“A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” – Mark Twain
Update: PCGamesN issued a formal apology to Mr. Lewis about the ambiguities in the article in question. The apology can be found here.
In the past few years, we can easily observe the rise of a very worrying trend. Sadly, everybody has to be extorted to pay the hefty “Public Opinion” tax. Everything has to be politically correct because someone might get offended. Banter in the workplace is no longer acceptable and we should all conform, obey, consume. God forbid you said something spicy in your past. Sadly, the esports industry is not immune to this.
“While the Esports Journalist of the Year award is determined by a public nomination and a public vote, at no point did the EIA organisers voice any concern with the public’s choice, nor move to exclude him from nomination.” – Hannah Dwan for PCGamesN.
A few days ago PCGamesN dropped a really obscure piece, which implied that the esports industry has problematic views. According to the publication, because we voted to be awarded by the Esports Industry Awards – Richard Lewis and Duncan ‘Thorin’ Shields we are *insert random buzzwords*. Yes, they are not perfect, but who is?
“Through partnerships, awards, and simple success, the platforms, companies, and organizations associated with esports are being represented by people whose histories include racist, misogynist, homophobic, and/or transphobic views, as well as those with violent or deceptive pasts.” – Hannah Dwan for PCGamesN.
Another interesting example was the TmarTn’s CS:GO wrongdoings. With this example, she noted that he was recently partnered to promote Call of Duty: WWII. Which to be honest is a really bad move from Activision, especially with the recent loot boxes scandals. Sadly for her and her integrity, she forgets to mention that his wrongdoing was uncovered by Mr. Richard Lewis himself! She also used Li “Vasilii” Wei Jun’s domestic abuse outburst. At least she notes that he was arrested by the police and banned from competitive play.
“I will shoot myself in the foot” type of hit piece?
Her other examples are not helping her build her case either. She uses the guy that uses “Reformed” as a way to describe himself – Tyler1 himself! He might have been quite rude in the past, but he paid a hefty price. He became the only one who was banned from streaming League of Legends. Today, he is a successful young man who managed to create history with the help of few people, green screen and a bit of glitter. She also briefly mentions “TrainwrecksTV” and his rant and shows that in her mind everybody’s crimes are irreversible. What kind of backward way of thinking is this? By her logic, we should hang the careers and livelihood of people for minor thought crimes. What kind of backward way of thinking is that?
“Albeit it does move” – Galileo Galilei
She also denigrates the work of the top tier female casters to just one word – “diversity”.
But Richard, Thorin and the others mentioned, except for TmarTn, are not alone in the fight. A heartwarming response to the article came from every corner of the industry. Some of the most renown and diverse members of the already diverse community came with a great unified message in support for the targets of the hit piece.
Recently the publication Updated the article with the following statement:
“Update: We spoke to Richard Lewis in the wake of publishing this article. We would like to make it clear that his inclusion in this feature purely relates to the one-off Dreamhack incident and ban from Reddit, not any transphobic, homophobic, racist or misogynistic beliefs. He also wishes to clarify that the joke made in his acceptance speech was not about the Loda incident but rather a reference to his poor upbringing.”
As for the others: In a good old “rude” fashion Thorin responded to the article by tweeting his Award. As for the others – as far as I am informed, they didn’t respond yet.
No, the Esports industry doesn’t need some random moral busybodies to tell us who we can like or support. We are old enough to decide on our own thank you very much! As a woman in esports, I stand behind the affected by this horrible hit piece victims. Except for TmarTn.
Disclaimer: Everything written is in my opinion and does not reflect the entire website’s stand regarding the matter. Also, I would like to note that I am quite biased towards Tyler1 since I find his cooking shows extremely entertaining! Richard Lewis and Thorin are few of my idols and I am happy that their work was finally recognized and awarded accordingly. I have nothing against the author and the publication and I wish both nothing but good things. I even relate to the author, I used to be quite judgmental, too!
