Dota’s new Ranking System scrutinized
Prior to this day, we only had to worry about +25’s and minuses. Ranking system is way too easy to understand. A number system would easily speak for itself.
As the new ranking system imposes a hierarchy of medals, they’ve added a premise into it. You can go up the ranks all you want, but your progress is categorized into seasons. As the blog states, we’re currently in a six-month Ranked Season. Therefore, it is safe to assume every season would go on for six months.
As stated: entering the season, all players will be able to earn a new Rank Medal on their profile that represents their highest performance level for the current season.
Back when it was in its number form, we’ve categorized ourselves by “brackets”. Valve didn’t have to impose divisions. 1k. 2k. 3k… 10k. Easy.
This time, different medals gave names to our old “brackets.” These Medals are: Herald, Guardian, Crusader, Archon, Legend, Ancient, and Divine. Herald being the lowest and Divine being the medal goal.
As opposed to going in and out of your old “brackets”, the new system declares the Seasonal Rank Medal to never decrease in rank once you’ve achieved it.
PROS: Going up the ranks should be easier. Before, a losing spree may have you end up from 4k to 2k. Now, you can be at the edge of your medal but not fall off the lower medal rank once you lose.
CONS: This system can be easily abused. Originally low MMR players can easily ask a friend to bring them up the medal ranks and they’ll be staying there forever no matter how many times they lose. Talk about crossing out “systematic” from “system”.
Party and Solo MMR
That 5k solo MMR you took so much sleepless nights to achieve? Viola! Now, it is replaced by a dash. Solo MMR and Party MMR will now be incorporated in one Medal Rank in the new Ranking System. Both Solo and Party games count towards increasing your medal. However, as your rank progresses, Solo games give more impact than Party games.
Ancient and Divine
As stated, in order for players to achieve either the Ancient or Divine Medals, only Solo-game performance is considered. Ancient and Divine are the highest rankings. This part of the system should be fair enough. (If we won’t be thinking about the CONS part mentioned previously.)
